Serban Ghiorghiu, M.D., is Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Chief Safety Officer at AstraZeneca where he leads global patient safety and patient science across a variety of areas, including oncology, cardiovascular, renal & metabolism, respiratory & immunology, vaccines & immune therapies, and rare diseases.

With more than 20 years of experience, he has held a range of leadership roles at AstraZeneca, including Head of Clinical Development, Late Development Oncology, where he led the end-to-end development of oncology medicines, from first-in-human studies to global regulatory approvals and launches. His leadership has focused on advancing trial strategy, strengthening patient engagement, and setting new standards for safety in medicine development. Serban earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Gr. T. Popa” Iasi, Romania and trained as a medical oncologist.
