Steffen Roellinger

SVP, Head of Clinical Operations, Bayer Pharmaceutical

Steffen Roellinger, PhD is Global Head for Clinical Operations at Bayer Pharmaceuticals since July 2018.

Steffen started his career in the Pharmaceutical industry in 1988 when he joined Knoll/BASF Pharma in Ludwigshafen as a bench researcher. In 1989 Steffen was one of five delegates that were selected to set up BASF Pharma in Cambridge, US, where he was involved in the inception of Humira. In 1991 Steffen moved back to Ludwigshafen, Germany and build up a Project Management group for Drug Development. Over the following years Steffen expanded his responsibilities to other areas, namely R&D Controlling, Drug Safety, Biostatistics, Data Management, Patents and Information Services.

Beginning of 2001, Abbott Labs acquired Knoll/BASF Pharma and Steffen became Managing Director of R&D for the Ludwigshafen site. In July 2002 joined Novartis in Basel, Switzerland as Global Head of Project Management for Development. From 2008 onwards Steffen held the position of Global Therapeutic Area Respiratory in Development.

Steffen joined Bayer in November 2011 as Head of Project Management in Pharma Development. He became Global Head for Portfolio and Operations in 2014, the predecessor function of Clinical Operations that was created in 2018.

Now based in Basel, Switzerland, Steffen holds a PhD in Immunology from the University of Hannover, Germany, having completed his Master in Biology at the University of Erlangen, Germany.
